The world's most peculiar shaped island, Sulawesi resembles anything from an
open-jawed crocodile to a specific letter "k". Lying between huge Kalimantan and
The Maluku islands, Sulawesi is Indonesia's 3rd largest island with an area of
172.00 sq km (about the size of Kansas). The population of multi-racial Sulawesi
is almost 13 millions. An amazing diversity of societies exists here, with
distinct separation of old and new, traditional and modern within the many
cultures themselves. There are fiercely Islamic Bugis and Makassarese of the S,
the animist-Christian Torajas in the south central region, and the prosperous
Christian Minahasana of the north. This variety, along with some spectacular
mountains, coastline, lakes and plains, makes Sulawesi a highly tourists visited
island who remains largely concentrated in the southern leg and specially in the
Tanatoraja highland culture region. However Sulawesi also contains some of the
most remote jungles areas in Indonesia, with unusual flora and fauna and nearly
unknown tribes, and is unique place to explore.
